Admission requirements

For admission to the master's degree program, completion of a previous undergraduate degree program (usually bachelor's degree) is required.

According to § 3 of the framework examination regulations (Bachelor/Master), admission to the Master's program in physics is tied to proof of a first university degree qualifying for a profession and to the following additional admission requirements:

  1. Proof of English language skills at level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference must be provided. (If you have acquired your bachelor degree  at an English-language institution,  an English proficiency letter issued by the university is sufficient.)
  2. Proof of a first professional degree in physics with at least 180 credit points or another equivalent degree must be provided.
  3. Evidence of the acquisition of at least 25 credit points in the field of Theoretical Physics, at least 25 credit points in Mathematics and at least 40 credit points in the field of Experimental Physics must be provided. A maximum of 15 credit points can be made up in the course of the first year.

For this program, no minimum grade is required as a final grade in the previous undergraduate program.

Enrollment/Application

This degree program is open-admission, so the number of places is not limited.

Existing Bachelor's degree from a German university

If you have already earned a bachelor's degree at a German university, an application is not required. If you meet the above admission requirements, you can directly enroll ("immatriculate") in the degree program.

Enrollment period for the winter semester:
In the period from 01.08. to 30.09. of the respective year online at the University of Rostock.

Enrollment period for the summer semester:
in the period from 01.02. to 31.03. of the respective year online at the University of Rostock.

Foreign students

If you have a Bachelor's degree from an international university, then you must apply via UNI-ASSIST by the relevant application deadlines. Incomplete or late documents will not be considered. Uncertified copies or transcripts cannot be accepted. After your documents have been checked, you will receive a decision as a result of the admission procedure at the University of Rostock.

Application deadline winter semester:
May 1 to July 15 of the year

Application deadline summer semester:
November 01 of the previous year to January 15 of the year.

Please submit the following documents:

  • copies of your educational background certificates such as from secondary school, university entrance exams, academic records of prior university semesters and other university reports and diplomas
  • proof of pre-check of the German embassy (APS-Certificate) for applicants from China, Vietnam and India
  • a copy of your certificate of sufficient English language skills as required for the requested course of study.
  • German or English transcripts of all your documents
  • complete curriculum vitae from the age of 16 with date and signature
